Eligibility: 
Be 18 years of age or older.
Be a resident of the state of Washington or be a residents of Idaho or Oregon and maintain regular employment or do business in Washington.
Be able to read and write the English language.
Receive the endorsement of three Washington residents who are eligible to vote and are not related to the applicant.
A notary public commits official misconduct when he or she signs a certificate evidencing a notarial act while knowing that the contents of the certificate are false. Official misconduct also constitutes unprofessional conduct for which disciplinary action may be taken. A notary public who commits an act of official misconduct shall be guilty of a gross misdemeanor.

Notary Term
4 years.
Notary Bond
Required. A $10,000 notary bond is required for new and renewing notaries.
Errors & Omissions Insurance
Optional. Washington Notary Association Co. strongly recommends that Washington notaries insure themselves against claims of negligence.
Notary Stamp/Notary Seal
Required. A embosser or rubber inked stamp. The Washington notary seal or stamp must contain the following elements: the words “Notary Public”, the words “State of Washington”, the commission expiration date, commission number and the notary’s surname and at least the initials of the notary’s first and middle names.
Recording Journal
None Required. It is strongly recommended by the Department of Licensing and Washington Notary Association Co. that Washington notaries public record every notarial act in a notary journal.
New & Renewal Application State Filing Fee
A $40.00 state filing fee is required for new notary applications. A $42.00 state filing fee is required for renewal notary applications.

Non-Residents
Permitted. Non-residents residing in Idaho or Oregon may apply to be a Washington notary public while regularly employed or doing business in Washington.
Notary Commission Renewal
A notary public may renew his or her appointment without the endorsements required by law if he or she submits a new application before the expiration date of his or her current appointment.

  • Notary bond.
  • Notary E&O insurance policy.

 

Complete the Washington notary public application.
Once you receive your notary bond from us via mail and complete your notary public application you will need to submit the following to the Department of Licensing:
  • Completed notary public application.
  • A copy of the notary bond. (Keep the original for your records.)
  • A $40.00 state filing fee is required for new notary applications. A $42.00 state filing fee is required for renewal notary applications. (Check or money order made payable to Department of Licensing.)

Once you have sent in your forms to the Department of Licensing you will need to wait for the Department of Licensing to send your commission materials and notary public certificate to you before proceeding to the next step. 

 

PLEASE DO NOT DELAY: To order your new stamp you must send us a copy of your commission license you received from the Washington Department of Licensing.

Once the Washington Department of Licensing approves your appointment they will send you your copy commission license via mail. We will need a copy of your commission license faxed, emailed or mailed to us as soon as possible so we can order your official stamp. NOTE: Please allow up to 3 business days for your stamp(s) to be personalized and manufactured. Once complete the stamp(s) will be mailed directly to you.
