Eligibility: 
Be 18 years old or older.
Be endorsed by two residents of Utah who are over the age of 18
Be a Utah resident or have permanent resident status under Section 245 of the Immigration and Nationality Act.
Read and write the English language.
Lawfully reside in Utah for 30 days immediately preceding the filing for a notarial commission and maintain permanent residency thereafter.
Submit an application to the lieutenant governor containing no significant misstatement or omission of fact.

Notary Term
4 years.
Notary Bond
Required. A bond in the amount of $5,000 is required for new and renewing notaries public.
Errors & Omissions Insurance
Optional. Utah Notary "Discount" Association strongly recommends that Utah notaries insure themselves against claims of negligence.
Notary Stamp/Notary Seal
Required. A purple inked stamp.
Record Journal
Required. A Utah notary public must keep and maintain a chronological, permanently bound official journal of all notarial acts he or she performs.
State Filing Fee
A $45 state filing fee is required for new and renewal notary applications.
Education/Testing
Required. The notary test has 35 questions totaling 65 points. A passing score is 61 or higher. Ten questions are heavily weighted (4 points each). An applicant will fail the test if he or she misses more than one of the weighted questions.

Notary Commission Renewal
A notary public may renew his or her commission by completing a new application and bond and by complying with statutory requirements.

Prepare, take and pass the required Utah notary certification test for new or renewal notaries. Once you pass the test you will need to print the notary application.

You will pay the testing and application fees together by credit card at the end of the test. Results are immediate. Please be sure to print or save your answers if you want a record. Remember, once you log out or leave the page displaying the questions or answers, all will be lost except for the score, which will be saved in the database. Once you pass the test you will need to print the notary application.

Complete the notary application and secure endorsers' signatures.

Complete and sign the notary application. You must also obtain endorsements from two Utah residents over the age of 18. Each endorser must print their name, residential address, and signatures in the spaces provided on the notary application.

  • Official seal stamp (if ordered) will be processed once we receive a copy of the completed certificate of authority from you (see step 7).

Receiving your Certificate of Authority of Notary Public from the Utah State Capital Notary Office:

You should receive your Certificate of Authority of Notary Public from the Utah State Capital Notary Office in 1 to 2 weeks. Once received please check the Certificate of Authority of Notary Public for spelling of all information.

Sign your Certificate of Authority in the presence of a notary and then provide us a copy of your completed Certificate of Authority so we can order your new official seal stamp. Please do not delay!
