Eligibility: 
Be 18 years of age or older.
Be a legal resident of the State of Texas.
You must disclose a finding of guilt for any crime (other than a class C Misdemeanor) from any jurisdiction regardless whether the case has been appealed. (A criminal conviction is NOT an automatic denial of notary commission.)
If you are a non-resident living in an adjoining state and have qualified as a Texas escrow agent, you are eligible for appointment as a Texas notary.

Required. A bond in the amount of $10,000 is required for new and renewing notaries public.
Errors & Omissions Insurance
Optional. Notary Association of Texas, Inc. strongly recommends that Texas notaries insure themselves against claims of negligence.
Notary Stamp/Notary Seal
Required. A embosser or rubber inked stamp.
Notary Public Recording Journal
Required. Texas notaries are required to maintain a notary record book or journal.
State Filing Fee
A $21 filing fee is required for new and renewal notary applications.

A notary public may apply 90 days before the commission expiration date by completing a renewal application form.

As of April 1, 2020 the Secretary of State prefers "original signatures" on the notary public application. Mouse signatures, electronic signatures or docusign signatures are also accepted. The state will no longer accept digital signatures, typed signatures, printed signatures or stamped signatures. For faster approval, we will file your completed forms with the Texas Secretary of State's office electronically.

Once the Texas Secretary of State's office receives your forms from us they will process your Texas notary public commission. Once your notary public commission is processed the Texas Secretary of State's office will email you your commission for your records as well as steps that you must complete before performing your notarial duties. If email receipt is not feasible, the Texas Secretary of State will send a commission by mail. Notaries may print an email commission in colored ink. Commissions delivered by mail will be in black ink.

Once we are notified from the state that your commission has been approved as a Texas notary public, we will immediately email and order you the following:
  • Notary errors & omissions policy.
  • Official seal stamp will be mailed separately. Please allow approximately 3 to 6 business days to receive your official seal stamp due to the fact that it must be personalized and manufactured.
