STEP 1 - COMPLETE THE WRITTEN NOTARY PUBLIC EXAMINATION.

You will need to request a test packet from the Nebraska Secretary of State’s Office. Applicants are required to pass a test to obtain a new notary public commission. The written examination will be a take home, open book type test. The test must be completed by the applicant who will then swear an oath that they completed the test without assistance from others. There will be 20 questions on the test consisting of multiple choice and true or false questions. The applicant may miss no more than 3 questions to pass. The required test is ONLY available through the Secretary of State's Office. Due to residency requirements, the test packet must be sent to applicants at their home address (street address required).

To request a test packet, you will need to provide the following information:

Applicant's name.
Applicant’s home address.
Telephone number (optional).

A test packet can be requested by one of following options:

The test packet will contain the following: a notary test, the notary public handbook, a new notary public application form and instructions for completing the application (FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE NEW NOTARY PUBLIC APPLICATION), a bond form and a U.S. Citizenship Attestation Form. Please complete all forms BUT submit the test ONLY and wait until you receive written notification from the Secretary of State's Office if you passed the test before continuing to STEP 2. If you do not pass the test the notary division of the office will send a second test out with the notification that the applicant did not pass the first test.

STATE OF NEBRASKA NOTARY REQUIREMENTS

ELIGIBILITY

Minimum Age: 19 years old or older.

Nebraska Resident: Be a resident of the State of Nebraska.

Jurisdiction: Statewide.

Criminal Offense: Notaries public who commit official misconduct may be subject to criminal liability, which may include the revocation of their notary public commissions.

Non-Residents: Not Permitted.


PROVISIONS

Term: 4 Years.

Bond Requirement: $15,000 notary public bond is required for new or renewal notaries.

Notary Seal Requirement: Rectangular stamp is required.

Education/Testing: Required. The written examination shall be developed and administered by the Secretary of State. If the applicant fails the second test, the applicant must wait six months before trying again.

State Filing Fee: A $30.00 filing fee is required for new or renewal notaries.

Recording Journal: Not required.
