STEP 1 - COMPLETE THE APPLICATION TO QUALIFY AND EXAMINATION REGISTRATION FORM.
Applicants are required to complete an APPLICATION TO QUALIFY in which La.R.S.35:191 requires the applicant to: attest to his good moral character, integrity and sober habits, be registered to vote in the parish in which he seeks commission, be a citizen or resident alien of the state and be 18 years of age or older.
Once you have completed the Application to Qualify, you can apply to take the state notary examination by filling out the EXAMINATION REGISTRATION FORM. The Application to Qualify fee is $25.00 and the Examination Registration fee is $75.00. Both checks are to be made payable to: Secretary of State.
The deadline to get your Application to Qualify and Examination Registration Form to the Secretary of State's Office is 45 days prior to the exam. Forms can be filed online or by mail, fax or email.

STEP 2 - HOW TO PREPARE AND TAKE THE LOUISIANA NOTARY PUBLIC EXAMINATION.
The Fundamentals of LOUISIANA NOTARIAL LAW and PRACTICE (Louisiana Notary Public Examination Official Study Guide) is available to purchase by completing the NOTARY PUBLIC STUDY GUIDE ORDER FORM. The current edition of the study guide can be obtained from the Secretary of State's office at a cost of $90. You can purchase the book by fax, email, or mail following the instructions provided in the order form. Those already licensed to practice law in the State of Louisiana are except from the exam requirement and may proceed to the next step, purchasing the required bond or insurance and supplies. No course or class is required by law in order for you to take the examination, but we suggest you take a good course or join a good study group. After you successfully pass the state exam you will receive a grade packet with your results and further instructions.
Examination Schedule: Pursuant to Act 423 of the 2006 Regular Louisiana Legislative Session the Notary Examination will be administered by the Secretary of State on the first Saturday in June and December.

STEP 4 - PREPARE YOUR ITEMS TO FINALIZE YOUR NOTARY COMMISSION
Once an applicant has taken and passed the examination, the following documents must be filed with the Secretary of State's office along with the $35 commission filing fee, in order to receive their notary commission:
1) Two (2) OATHS OF OFFICE, properly executed. Send one (1) copy to the Secretary of State and file one (1) copy with parish Clerk of Court.
2) OFFICIAL SIGNATURE PAGE.
3) Original or Certified True Copy Surety or Personal surety bond that has been approved by the parish Clerk of Court in the amount of $10,000 OR Attorneys provide an original certificate of good standing from the Louisiana Supreme Court issued within the past 30 days. Attorneys do not have to file a notary bond.
4) $35.00 commission filing fee. Please make a check or money order payable to: (Secretary of State).

STEP 5 - CHECK THE NOTARY DATABASE FOR YOUR LOUISIANA NOTARY PUBLIC INFORMATION AND BEGIN YOUR NOTARY DUTIES.
Once you have completed the above 4 steps you will need to check the Official NOTARY DATABASE often until you see that you are listed as an active notary public. Please be advised you do not need to wait for your commission information to arrive in the U.S. mail. STATE REQUIREMENTS
ELIGIBILITY
Minimum Age: 18 years or older.
Louisiana Resident: Be a legal resident of the State of Louisiana.
Jurisdiction: Statewide for attorneys. Notaries are commissioned in the parish of their residence. Notaries in reciprocal parishes have the authority to exercise their official acts within the group reciprocal parishes without additional bonding or examination. If the parishes are not reciprocal, notaries have to obtain a Dual Commission to notarize in another parish and maintain bonds in both parishes.
Non-Residents: Not Permitted.
PROVISIONS
Term: 5 year bond term. Life.
Bond Requirement: $10,000 notary public bond is required for new or renewal notaries.
Notary Seal Requirement: None required.
Education/Testing: Required. Attorneys, appointed notaries seeking a dual commission, or notaries qualifying for a commission in a new parish because of a change in residence are exempt from having to take the notary examination. The examination is given twice a year on the first Saturday in June and December.
State Filing Fee: $25 qualifying application fee; $35 commission filing fee.
Recording Journal: Required--only for notaries in Orleans Parish.
