APPOINTMENT AND COMMISSION

Probate Judges for each county are responsible for appointing and commissioning Notaries in the State of Alabama.

The Secretary of State receives information on the name, county, issuance date and commission expiration date of each notary appointed and commissioned under applicable law as conveyed by the Probate Judge in each county.

Persons interested in being appointed a notary public, should contact their county’s Probate Judge. Click here to obtain contact information for him or her.   NOTE: The Secretary of State does not appoint or commission notaries. All records filed with the Secretary of State regarding the appointment and commissioning of notaries are a matter of public record and are available to the general public for viewing. The current list of commissioned notaries is available by clicking here.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Code of Alabama defines the duties and responsibilities of notaries. The statutes governing notaries are available for review on line, courtesy of the Alabama Legislature.

In 1995, the Attorney General's office issued an Opinion to the Secretary of State that discusses the appointment, commission, qualifications, bond and seal of notaries public in Alabama. The Opinion is available from the Attorney General's web site. Click to review Attorney General Opinion 95-00289.
